Welcome to my travel diary for Sri Lanka, which Carol and I visited in February and March of 2025.
You’d think after the trials and tribulations of the South India trip, I would have wanted a long break from that part of the world. And I’d always, like so many people dismissed travel in Sri Lanka as ‘India-light’. But if there’s one thing that travel always teaches me, is that the tired old clichés about countries are always wrong and the truth is always much more interesting. Sri Lanka is a fascinating country with a distinctiveness all its own, and despite a horrifically troubled modern history, is full of friendly, warm, welcoming people.
In fact, the trip turned out to be just the antidote for the sometimes difficult trip last year, and inspired us both; and we were sure to include a few days of simple relaxation – because it is supposed to be a holiday after all. But basically, we’re in our happy place when we’re discovering new places, and we have to find a way to do it as much as possible.
How to navigate this diary
The Sri Lanka link at the top of the page in the main menu takes you to the main Sri Lanka page where you can access all the days of this diary. Alternatively, start reading here (or anywhere, for that matter) and use the Previous and Next links at the bottom of each page to navigate through the days. You can always keep track by looking at the date.
When you’re reading a page, you’ll see blocks of photo thumbnails (wait a little while for all of these to load onto the page). You can roll over a thumbnail to read the photo’s caption. I’ve also added the occasional video.
To see full-size versions of these photos (highly recommended, as the thumbnails are cropped), click on a thumbnail. Once the image is blown up, you can navigate left and right through the full size images, or click the X in the top right hand corner to exit them and go back to the text.
Leave a comment at the bottom of any page if you feel like it.
Ciyars!
